SEISMIC GLOSSARY

Adviser - a position that exerts programme direction, will accept kudos but definitely no responsibility when it hits the fan, usually a verbally adept person.

Camp Manager - see Manager, usually a poor underpaid & overworked ex-kiap.

Chief Pilot - similar to a Manager, that is, not necessarily a position of great authority or influence or remuneration but definitely a person who can be held responsible for a stuff up.

Consultant - same as an Adviser but paid a lot more.

Contractor - a person who visits the field from time to time ostensibly to visit his staff, troubleshoot and touch base with project management but whose underlying motive is to chase up unpaid invoices, often characterised by promising to or sparingly handing out corporate promotional material of dubious quality.

Driller - a Kiwi.

Drilling Mechanic - (editor: words fail me).

Expeditor - see Manager, usually a poor underpaid & overworked ex-kiap who has not as yet asked his employer for a pay rise.

Geophysicist - sub surface spin doctor.

Labour Manager - see Manager, usually a poor underpaid & overworked ex-kiap.

Line Preparation Manager - see Manager, usually a poor underpaid & overworked ex-kiap.

Logistics Manager - see Manager, usually a poor underpaid & overworked ex-kiap.

Manager - (1) not necessarily a position of great authority or influence or remuneration but definitely a person who can be held responsible for a stuff up, also a group responsibility in that a Manager in one discipline can be held responsible for a stuff ups of a Manager in another (2) usually a title bestowed upon a person in lieu of a pay increase by the employing Contractor

Party Chief - (thinking, thinking ...)

Permitting Manager - see Manager, usually a poor underpaid & overworked ex-kiap.

Pilot - similar to a Supervisor in that he can also pass the buck onto the Chief Pilot.

Project Co-ordinator - (can't think of a smart arse comment yet)

Project Manager - (can think of a smart arse comment but not game to print it)

SS - senior surveyor, seismic surveyor, shop steward, stirrer.

Supervisor - similar to a Manager in that he can be blamed for a stuff up but has the benefit of being able to pass the buck onto his Manager.
